When booking a hotel one shouldn't just book and fork over money without asking some appropriate questions first. By not asking some questions you could be paying too much, or end up with a hotel stay from hell instead of a relaxing one. Here are 10 questions you should ask before booking your hotel.

Question 1. Ask about the total cost of the booking. This may sound strange but many hotels will tell you the price then will tack on the extra fees and tax, so you want to know the whole cost, so you don't get a nasty surprise when your credit card bill turns up.

Question 2. Ask about refunds. Hotels are fairly strict about deadlines and will hold firm on cancellations and deposits and when they are due. The truth is they are not always open, or advertise what the deadlines are, so make sure you ask upfront in case there is an unavoidable cancellation or delay.

Question 3. Ask about the amenities in your room specifically. Many hotel brochures and websites will show all the amenities like the mini fridge, and television, but they don't always state that all these amenities are in every single room. Sometimes the amenities shown are only available in their best suites, so be sure to ask ahead of time.

Question 4. What is within walking distance? This can be an important question to ask as you will probably want to purchase some things when you arrive like clothes, food, and perhaps even some swimwear.Nonetheless, you want to know ahead of time, so you can plan your days. If, there are no shops for miles you may need to rent a car or even change hotel.

Question 5. Ask about smoking and pets. Many hotels still allow smoking and even pets, depending on the state or country. If, you have allergies, or prefer not to be around pets and smoke be sure to ask beforehand.
